If you’re craving some nostalgic supernatural vibes with a modern, queer twist, you’ll want to keep an eye out for The Serpent’s Skin. The trailer just dropped, and it feels like a total love letter to Buffy and Charmed—only way more inclusive.
This indie horror-romance is the latest project from 21-year-old trans director Alice Maio Mackay (T Blockers, Carnage for Christmas). Despite her age, she’s already a pro, with this being her sixth feature film.
Magic, Monsters, and Messy Exes
The story follows Anna, a 20-something who ditches her small, transphobic hometown for a fresh start in the city with her sister. Things get weird fast when she meets Gen—a girl she’s actually been seeing in her visions.
It turns out Gen has supernatural powers, and she and Anna share a magical connection. But the honeymoon phase is cut short when Gen accidentally unleashes a demon inside Anna’s former fling, Danny. Now, this hungry evil is hunting down everyone they love.
The Team
The cast features Alexandra McVicker (Vice Principals), Avalon Fast, and Jordan Dulieu, alongside Scott Major (Heartbreak High) and several of Mackay’s regular collaborators. Behind the scenes, the film was edited by The People’s Joker director Vera Drew, with a score by H6LLB6ND6ER, the band belonging to the filmmaking family, the Adams.
