Writer-Director Martín Mauregui’s new, chilling horror film, Crazy Old Lady, lands on Shudder today. Luckily, I had the chance to talk with Mauregui about the film, which I called “a brilliant descent into madness” and so much more in my review.
Mauregui is best known for his films, such as Leonera, Argentina 1985, and more. This time, he has teamed up with executive producer and genre genius J.A. Bayona for a chilling story of aging, family, and brutality. Ladies and gentlemen, this is horror done right.
Crazy Old Lady
Meet Pedro (Daniel Hendler), a guy whose Tuesday is going south fast. It all kicks off with a “mayday” call from his ex-girlfriend, who’s in a serious bind and needs a last-minute sitter for her senile mother, Alicia.
Proving he hasn’t quite mastered the art of saying “no” to an ex, Pedro agrees to help. He pulls up to the house during a textbook “dark and stormy night” to meet Alicia, portrayed by the legendary Carmen Maura. But here’s the kicker: Alicia isn’t just some forgetful grandmother. This senior citizen is sharp, cold, and carries a mean streak a mile wide.
Worst of all? She has no plans to let her guest leave. What was supposed to be a chill evening of channel-surfing quickly devolves into a gauntlet of sadistic, life-or-death “games.” If Pedro wants to keep his head—literally—he’s going to have to play by her twisted rules.
