If you thought surviving a plane crash was the hard part, Renny Harlin is here to remind you that the ocean is just a giant, salty buffet—and you’re the main course.

The legendary director behind Deep Blue Sea and the recent Strangers trilogy is returning to his roots with Deep Water. And it’s swimming into theaters on May 1 via Magenta Light Studios. The new poster has landed with imagery that makes things simple: a plane is going down, and there’s a real monster waiting.

The Flight from Hell

The premise is a classic “worst-case scenario” cocktail. A group of passengers traveling from LA to Shanghai finds their flight cut short—an emergency landing in the middle of the ocean. As the plane begins to sink, the survivors have to stop bickering long enough to realize that the wreckage has acted like a massive dinner bell for every shark in a fifty-mile radius.

An A-List Buffet

The cast is stacked. It includes Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight) and Ben Kingsley (Shutter Island), who lead the charge. They’re joined by Angus Sampson (Insidious), Molly Belle Wright, and Kelly Gale. Li Wenhan (of the K-pop group UNIQ) and Nashi round out the cast.

Director Renny Harlin isn’t hiding his inspiration, either. He’s aiming for that 1970s disaster movie vibe. It’s high-stakes action paired with characters that actually make you care.

The Powerhouse Behind the Teeth

Perhaps the most “rock and roll” aspect of the production is the studio itself. Simmons/Hamilton Productions is a new partnership between KISS co-founder Gene Simmons and Gary Hamilton. Deep Water is the opening salvo in a massive five-year plan to release 25 “high-octane, seat-of-your-pants” adventures. With Gene Simmons involved, you can bet the spectacle will be loud, proud, and probably a little bloody.

A Tale of Two Deep Waters

Just a quick PSA for your watchlist: don’t confuse this blockbuster with the other Deep Water also hitting screens in 2026. Directed by Dustin Ferguson and available now, that version trades the sinking airliner for a luxury yacht. In Ferguson’s flick, two couples looking for a champagne-soaked birthday weekend find themselves “dead in the water” after engine trouble turns their party into a survival struggle.
