Huntr/x is officially ready for an encore. After months of “will they, won’t they” speculation that felt longer than a trainee’s contract, Netflix and Sony have confirmed that a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters is officially in the works.

The dream team of Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will return to write and direct the follow-up, which also serves as the opening act of their shiny new, multi-year animation deal with the streamer.

The Stats: A Global Chart-Topper

To say the first movie was a hit is like saying a song is “kind of catchy.” Since its debut in June 2025, KPop Demon Hunters hasn’t just broken records—it’s shattered them.

It is officially the most-watched Netflix original movie of all time, racking up a staggering 500 million global views. Even as a streaming title, it dominated the physical world with sing-along screenings that grossed an estimated $18 million in a single weekend.

But that’s not all, the news of the sequel comes just days before the Oscars, where the film is currently a frontrunner for both Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song (for the absolute earworm, “Golden”).

The Next Chapter

The original film followed Huntr/x, a fictional girl group juggling world tours with the slightly more stressful task of protecting Earth from demons using the power of music. While the sequel is reportedly eyeing a 2029 release, the directors are already warning fans that “letting it cook” takes time—especially when the first one set the bar in the stratosphere.

“I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this story,” says Maggie Kang. “There’s so much more to this world… This is only the beginning.”

If by some strange twist of fate you missed KPop Demon Hunters, you can watch it on Netflix now. Here’s a look back at the trailer.
