If you’ve been waiting for a supernatural slayer story with a queer heartbeat, consider your prayers answered. The brand-new Red Band trailer for The Serpent’s Skin just dropped, and it’s a bloody, neon-soaked love letter to Buffy and Charmed.
Magic, Monsters, and Really Bad Breakups
This indie horror-romance comes from the mind of 21-year-old trans directing prodigy Alice Maio Mackay (T Blockers, Carnage for Christmas). Believe it or not, this is already her sixth feature film, proving she’s essentially the overachiever of the horror world.
The story centers on Anna. She’s a 20-something who flees her small, transphobic hometown for a fresh start in the city with her sister. But the city isn’t exactly quiet. Anna starts seeing a mysterious girl named Gen in her visions—and then she actually meets her.
The Catch: Gen has supernatural powers, and she and Anna are magically tethered. Unfortunately, the “getting to know you” phase is interrupted when Gen accidentally unleashes a demon inside Anna’s former fling, Danny. Now, a very hungry, very possessed ex is hunting down everyone in their circle. Talk about toxic relationships.
The Indie Dream Team
Mackay has assembled a powerhouse squad for this one. The film stars Alexandra McVicker (Vice Principals), Avalon Fast, and Jordan Dulieu, with Scott Major (Heartbreak High) lending some veteran weight.
The film was cut by Vera Drew, the visionary director of The People’s Joker. And get this, the score is by H6LLB6ND6ER (the musical arm of the legendary Adams filmmaking family).
