Pack your sunscreen and your industrial-strength antidepressants, because the Conquistador era is about to get significantly more “tentacular.” ACE Team and NACON have officially dropped the release date and a fresh gameplay trailer for their co-op horror-adventure, The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu.
Mark your calendars for Wednesday, July 15, 2026, when the game arrives on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. It’s time to find out if you have what it takes to survive the 16th century without losing your head—or your soul.
The Contract: Gold, Glory, and Great Old Ones
Following its standout debut at the November Xbox Showcase, The Mound is leaning hard into its unique niche: a purely cooperative survival experience set during the age of exploration.
You and up to three “friends” (who will eventually look like monsters to you—more on that in a second) start on the deck of a galleon. “El Capitán” has a simple laundry list for you:
-
Amass obscene wealth.
-
Find a missing person.
-
Locate an ancient fort.
-
Try not to die. (Optional)
The moment your boots hit the jungle sand, the dread sets in. This isn’t just a tropical getaway; it’s a Lovecraftian nightmare where the trees have eyes, and the treasures are guarded by entities that don’t appreciate uninvited guests.
Gameplay: Run, Don’t Fight
This isn’t a power fantasy. In The Mound, your inventory is frustratingly small, and your basic weapons are essentially fancy toothpicks compared to the cosmic abominations lurking in the brush.
-Speed is Life: The longer you linger on the island, the angrier (and more numerous) the creatures become.
-Defense Over Offense: The game encourages avoiding conflict whenever possible. If you’re playing aggressively, you’re playing wrong—and you’re probably about to become monster food.
The Real Enemy: Your Own Mind
While the monsters are terrifying, the Sanity System is the real star of the show. As your explorers confront cosmic horrors, the hallucinations kick in, and the game starts gaslighting you. That “harmless plain” ahead? Actually, a deadly pit. That bush? It’s moving. That rain? It’s blood. The Kicker: Your loyal teammate might suddenly look like a multi-eyed monstrosity. Good luck deciding whether to heal them or torch them.
If you somehow make it back to the ship with your sanity (mostly) intact, El Capitán will be thrilled to give you your gold… before immediately sending you back out into the meat grinder.
Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s classic short story, The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu looks to be the most stressful team-building exercise of 2026. See you on the shore on July 15.
