Move over, Godzilla; there’s a new titan in town, and it doesn’t look like it’s here to make friends. Apple TV+ just gave us our most intimate look yet at the Monsterverse’s latest nightmare in “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” Season 2, Episode 3, which aired on Friday, the 13th—and it’s officially time to stop calling it “Titan X.”

While other cinematic universes are currently tripping over their own capes, the Monsterverse is busy dominating the charts by doing what it does best: unleashing massive, mysterious things that make us feel very, very small.

The Boogeyman of the Deep

For weeks, fans have been obsessively theorizing about the identity of the mysterious creature terrorizing the Earth’s oceans. Monarch and Apex are currently playing a high-stakes game of “Tag, You’re It” with the beast, but Episode 3 finally dropped the name: Co’cai.

The Linguistic Deep Dive:

The name comes from Chilean natives who reportedly worshipped the Titan. The Theory: While the word doesn’t have direct Spanish roots, it bears a striking resemblance to “Coco”—the legendary Hispanic boogeyman. It also might be a nod to “coco” (slang for head or skull), which is pretty on-the-nose considering this thing was unleashed on Skull Island and sports a massive, skull-shaped noggin.

Sorry, Biollante Fans: It’s a Newcomer

If you had “Biollante” on your Monsterverse Bingo card, it’s time to grab the white-out. While the creature’s design has some floral, toothy vibes reminiscent of the 1989 classic Godzilla vs. Biollante, the name Co’cai confirms we are dealing with a 100% original Titan.

By moving away from Toho’s established roster, the Monarch creative team is pulling a savvy move. Instead of old-school fans having a lore-based advantage, we’re all learning about this apex predator at the same pace as our heroes (well, except for Lee and Keiko, who survived a terrifying 1957 encounter with it and are keeping some secrets of their own).

Watch the first episodes of the new season now on Apple TV and get ready for more action when the next episode airs this Friday!
