Get ready to check in, because you’re probably never checking out. After a long hiatus, AMC’s hit horror anthology is finally returning to ruin your sleep schedule. “The Terror: Devil in Silver” is set to premiere this May on AMC+ and Shudder. This season, the series is trading the frozen Arctic and WWII camps for something even more claustrophobic: a psychiatric ward.

The first look is here, introducing us to the characters and teasing the new chapter of this dark and brilliant series, which we are totally here for!

Wrong Place, Wrong Time, Wrong Entity

Dan Stevens (Abigail, Downton Abbey) stars as Pepper, a working-class guy whose “bad luck and bad temper” land him in the New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital. Unfortunately for Pepper, New Hyde isn’t exactly a place of healing. It’s a dumping ground for people society wants to erase.

Between secretive doctors and patients who aren’t exactly friendly, Pepper has to survive a literal “hellscape” where a supernatural entity thrives on the suffering of the inmates. To get out, he has to face the Devil—but he might find that his own internal demons are the ones winning the fight.

The Heavy Hitters

Based on the celebrated novel by Victor LaValle, this six-episode limited series is basically a “dream team” of horror and prestige TV creators. This six-episode limited series is basically a “dream team” of horror and prestige TV creators. If the plot doesn’t grab you, the credits will. This season is stacked with talent both in front of and behind the camera, with Karyn Kusama (Yellowjackets) directing. Both  Chris Cantwell (Halt and Catch Fire) and author Victor LaValle serve as showrunners. The one and only Ridley Scott.is executive producing.

As for the cast, it’s a true “who’s who” of character actors, including Judith Light, CCH Pounder, Aasif Mandvi, and the incomparable Stephen Root.

A Return to “Elevated” Horror

Previous seasons of The Terror dealt with naval expeditions and internment camps. “Devil in Silver” looks to maintain that signature blend of “real-world grit” and “supernatural doom.” As showrunner Chris Cantwell puts it, the story is packed with death and horror, but it’s anchored by the “fragile humanity” of characters you’ll actually care about.

“The Terror: Devil in Silver” kicks off its weekly rollout on May 7. If you need to catch up, the first two seasons, which are fantastic, are currently streaming on Shudder to get you in the mood for some high-end misery.
