It’s been over a decade since we first learned that the only thing more persistent than a student loan is a shapeshifting supernatural curse. After a few years of “will-they-won’t-they” development delays, star Maika Monroe has finally confirmed that the It Follows sequel, They Follow, is officially her next destination. And, based on the title, it sounds like the sequel will turn up the terror with more entities.

The Return of Jay

Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Monroe didn’t just hint at the project—she shouted it from the rooftops. “We’re doing it! That’s the next job,” she proclaimed, confirming that she will reprise her role as Jay Height.

While the 2014 original was a masterclass in isolated, suburban dread, the title They Follow suggests the threat has officially scaled up. According to Monroe, the script is “very dark”. It pushes the boundaries of the established universe while maintaining the nostalgic, slow-burn cinematography that made the first film a modern classic.

The Dream Team Reunited

Fans of the original’s eerie aesthetic can breathe a sigh of relief. David Robert Mitchell is back at the helm to steer the nightmare, with Neon and Good Fear Content producing.

Ten years have passed since Jay first tried to outrun the entity, and the sequel reportedly finds her in a “grounded” and “interesting” place that fans won’t expect.

A Summer of Screams

While production was originally slated for 2024, scheduling conflicts (and Mitchell’s secret “dinosaur time-travel” project, Flowervale Street) pushed things back. However, at a recent SXSW 2026 panel, Monroe confirmed that cameras are finally set to roll this summer.

In the Meantime

If you can’t wait until 2027 to see Monroe back in “Scream Queen” mode, you’re in luck. She recently starred in the live-action short film for Resident Evil Requiem (which launched February 2nd). In it, she underwent over three hours of prosthetic makeup to portray a survivor-turned-zombie—a perfect appetizer for the “boundary-pushing” horror she’s promising in They Follow.

If you want to rewatch It Follows, you can find it on Prime Video, Apple TV, and Plex.
