If you thought the water in Minnesota was safe, Jim Ojala is here to remind you that nature has a very twisted way of fighting back. The filmmaker and creature effects maestro—who we first interviewed when the film originally hopped onto the scene—has officially announced a definitive Director’s Cut Blu-ray of his eco-horror cult hit, Strange Nature.

The Mystery in the Marsh

Inspired by chilling real-life reports of deformed frogs found in midwestern wetlands, the film follows a disgraced ex-pop star-turned single mom and a local science teacher. Together, they uncover a gruesome environmental “glitch”: something in the water is triggering grotesque mutations that are moving rapidly up the food chain.

What makes this film a standout for genre purists is Ojala’s background in practical effects. He didn’t just use CGI; he blended real footage of malformed frogs with old-school creature design to create something truly unsettling.

The “Definitively Mutated” Edition

This isn’t just a re-release; it’s a full restoration. Echelon Studios has stepped in for worldwide streaming rights, but the physical media is where the real “slime” is.

The new Blu-ray includes:

  • The Director’s Cut: Featuring expanded scenes and never-before-seen restored footage.

  • Deep-Dive Featurettes: Go behind the scenes of the creature shop to see how the practical effects were created.

  • The “Making Of” Saga: Interviews with the cast and crew detailing the long journey from real-life headline to horror masterpiece.

  • Deleted Scenes: For those who need every drop of the mystery.

Pre-Order Window & Collector Perks

The pre-order window officially opens today, March 27, 2026, and runs until Earth Day (April 22). If you jump in early, the first pressing includes a Limited Collector Bonus Pack and a special edition slipcover that’ll look great next to your other “nature-gone-wrong” classics. The discs are expected to ship out in June 2026. Pre-order your copy of Strange Nature now.

Strange Nature has found a passionate audience, and I’m excited to finally share the version that shows exactly how we blurred the line between real-life deformity and cinematic horror.” — Jim Ojala
