Before you step into the world’s most frustrating commute, Neon has unveiled the final poster for Exit 8. This Japanese psychological thriller is a live-action dive into “liminal horror”—that specific, skin-crawling feeling of being in a space that should be busy, but is unnervingly empty.
The Rules of the Loop
Based on the game by Kotake Create, the premise is deceptively simple, which is exactly what makes it so terrifying. A man finds himself trapped in a sterile, endless subway passageway. To find the real Exit 8 and escape, he must follow a strict set of rules:
-Don’t Overlook Anything: Scour every inch of the hallway for even the tiniest anomaly.
-Spot a Change? Turn back immediately.
-Everything Normal? Keep walking forward.
-The Catch: A single oversight—missing a flickering light or a slightly misplaced poster—resets the entire loop, sending him right back to the beginning.
A Powerhouse Creative Pedigree
This isn’t just a gimmick movie; it’s backed by some of the biggest names in Japanese cinema. Kawamura Genki (the visionary behind Your Name) not only directed, but also co-wrote the film.
Kazunari Ninomiya (Letters from Iwo Jima) plays “The Lost Man.” Nana Komatsu (Silence) also stars in the film produced by Kenji Yamada, who recently brought us the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One.
Why the Hype is Real
After a massive festival run—hitting Cannes, TIFF, Sitges, and this week’s Overlook Film Festival—critics are already calling it a masterclass in tension.
“The true magic lies in its ability to recreate the feeling of playing the game,” writes Meagan Navarro. “You’ll find yourself scouring the walls, floors, and ceilings right along with the protagonist.”
Rated PG-13 for terror and some bloody images, Exit 8 is the perfect pick for fans of The Backrooms or anyone who enjoys a good cinematic panic attack. Exit 8 hits theaters this Friday, April 10.
