It’s been a few months since the four-episode Marvel Zombies limited series took a massive bite out of Disney+. And fans have been dying to know: Is this apocalypse just getting started?

The answer is a resounding yes. While chatting with The Escape Pod this week, Marvel’s Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation Brad Winderbaum officially spilled the beans (and the brains) that a second season is already in the works.

Something “New” is Coming

Winderbaum didn’t just confirm the renewal; he dropped a tantalizing hint about what’s lurking in the scripts. “I saw the first animatic of the first episode of Marvel Zombies Season 2… it was crazy,” Winderbaum teased.

He added that the new season delivers on the gore, but also features “an MCU thing that has never really happened before that we’re very excited to do.”

From ‘What If…?’ to a Full-Blown Plague

What started as a standout horror episode in 2021’s What If…? quickly mutated into its own standalone beast.

Based on the fan-favorite comic run followed by the “What if..?” episode, Marvel Zombies explores a dystopian alternate universe where the Avengers are overtaken by a zombie plague, leaving a ragtag group of survivors to race across a limb-ripping landscape to find a cure. The series was spawned by an episode of “What if…?” and became a full-blown infectious triumph.

Why Fans Are Biting

The first season was a massive hit for horror-loving Marvel fans, thanks to its unapologetic TV-MA rating. The voice cast was a literal “Who’s Who” of the MCU, including Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Simu Liu, and Hailee Steinfeld.

Critics have praised the series for its “gonzo, out-of-control carnage,” with many calling it a gorgeous success that turns standard superhero theatrics into a disturbing, unpredictable apocalypse.

If you’re a fan of “brain-chomping, body-blasting” action, stay tuned. The MCU’s creepy corner is about to get a lot more crowded. Here’s a look back at the season one trailer. Watch it now on Disney+.
