If you’ve been sleeping too soundly lately, Noah Hawley is here to fix that. The Emmy-winning mastermind behind Fargo and the upcoming Alien: Earth has officially signed on to direct a remake of the Argentine horror sensation Terrified (Aterrados).
Developing the project alongside the original creator, Demián Rugna (who recently scared us all with When Evil Lurks), Hawley is bringing this nightmare to Warner Bros. It will be under his 26 Keys banner. It’s a match made in a very dark, very stylish heaven.
Don’t Look Under the Bed (or Anywhere Else)
For those who missed the 2017 original on Shudder, Terrified isn’t your standard “bump in the night” flick. Set in a quiet neighborhood in Buenos Aires, the story follows a cop and a team of paranormal investigators as they try to explain why the local real estate has suddenly become a portal to the grotesque. It’s less about “haunted houses” and more about “the fabric of reality is tearing, and something very mean is crawling through.”
Most horror movies are lucky if they can make you jump once. Terrified, however, is essentially a high-speed collision of nightmare fuel.
A Long Road to the States
This isn’t the first time Hollywood has tried to translate Rugna’s brand of terror. In 2018, a remake was originally set up at Fox Searchlight, but never arrived. That version had Guillermo del Toro producing and Rugna himself directing.
What’s on the Slate?
Hawley is a busy man. Between navigating the xenomorph-infested waters of “Alien: Earth “Season 2 and now diving into the supernatural abyss of Terrified, he is quickly becoming the go-to guy for making audiences deeply uncomfortable in the best way possible.
A piece of advice: keep the lights on. Between Rugna’s raw, visceral scares and Hawley’s gift for psychological dread, this remake is shaping up to be the cinematic equivalent of a panic attack you can’t look away from.
If you somehow missed the original film, don’t panic. You can watch it now on AMC+, Shudder, and Prime Video. Here’s a look back at the trailer.
