If you’ve been itching to stare into the void and see who blinks first, NACON and Big Bad Wolf have some maddeningly good news. To celebrate the kickoff of Lovecraftian Days, a free demo for Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is available right now on Steam.
Consider it a little appetizer of existential dread before the full nightmare serves itself up on April 16.
Investigation at the Edge of Sanity
In this first-person narrative thriller, you step into the boots of Noah, an agent for the “Ancile”—a specialized office that handles the kind of occult “accidents” the government would rather forget. Your mission? Investigate a group of miners who went missing in the Pacific.
Naturally, “missing” is an understatement. You’ll be plunged into the heart of R’lyeh, an ancient, labyrinthine sunken city that serves as a high-security prison for the Great Dreamer himself: Cthulhu.
The Gameplay: Trust No One (Including Yourself)
-The Companion: You aren’t diving into the abyss alone. You’re joined by KEY, an AI companion who helps you navigate complex puzzles and the shifting geometry of the sunken city.
-Narrative Weight: Every choice you make influences Noah’s destiny. Will you remain a professional investigator, or will the Great Old Ones rewrite your psyche?
-Mental Corruption: It wouldn’t be Lovecraft without a sanity meter. You’ll have to resist the creeping corruption caused by Cthulhu’s influence. But beware, your mind is the first thing to break.
A Word from the Director
As part of the Lovecraftian Days showcase, game director Tommaso Sergi Nuti made a special appearance. He discussed the team’s focus on immersion and tension. According to Nuti, the goal was to create an environment that feels like a predator, making every investigation feel like a fight for survival.
