Twenty years ago, a “rising” serial killer showed us exactly how much prep work goes into a legendary slaughter. Now, the mockumentary that deconstructed the slasher genre is finally getting its second act. Variety has now confirmed that Behind the Mask II: The Return of Leslie Vernon is officially in production!

It turns out Leslie wasn’t dead—he was waiting for the genre to get meta enough for his comeback.

The Original

Leslie Vernon (Nathan Baesel), an aspiring “supernatural” killer, grants a documentary crew—led by journalist Taylor Gentry (Angela Goethals)—exclusive access as he prepares for his debut massacre.

The Dream Team is Back

This isn’t just a low-effort reboot! The original architects of Glen Echo’s finest nightmare are returning to finish the job in Behind the Mask II: The Return of Leslie Vernon. That includes the director, Scott Glossernan; the writer, David J. Stieve; and the stars, Nathan Baesel (Leslie Vernon), Angela Goethals (Taylor Gentry), and the legend himself, Robert Englund (Doc Halloran).

Glosserman didn’t mince words about the two-decade gap:

“For 20 years, people have asked if Leslie would ever come back. The truth is, he never really left. Fans kept this movie alive… introducing it to their friends and treating it like something worth holding onto. This sequel is happening because of them.”

A “Spree-quel” for the Fans

While the film has secured production backing from Paper Street Pictures (The Pale Door), the creators are launching a Kickstarter. They are aiming to let the community help define the scale of the carnage.

The deal is simple: with or without the extra cash, Leslie is rising. Additional funds will go toward expanding the set pieces, securing more cameos, and upping the “wow” factor of Leslie’s latest master plan.

Why Leslie Still Matters

In a cinematic landscape currently dominated by Scream 7 and Scary Movie 6, Leslie Vernon’s approach to slashing is more relevant than ever. As Glosserman noted, Leslie has a “substantive conceptual understanding” of horror archetypes. He isn’t just a killer. He’s a student of the game. Now, he’s coming back to show the new class how it’s done.

The Production Buzz

Produced by Aaron B. Koontz and Cameron Burns, with Adam F. Goldberg (The Goldbergs) serving as Executive Producer, the sequel is being crafted by people who have championed the property for years.

If you’ve spent the last 20 years practicing your “walk-run” and checking your window locks, your training is about to be put to the test. Leslie Vernon is back, and he’s had a lot of time to work on his cardio. Stay tuned—and maybe check the perimeter of your house, just in case.

If you want to relive the horror of the original, you can watch it now on AMC+, Hoopla, and Prime Video. Here’s a look back at the original trailer.
