. After years of sitting in “stealth mode,” the long-awaited Metal Gear Solid film adaptation is finally making some noise. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony has officially tapped the directing duo Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein to bring Hideo Kojima’s 1998 masterpiece to the big screen.
If the names sound familiar, it’s because they just successfully resurrected another dormant giant: they are the minds behind last year’s box-office hit Final Destination: Bloodlines. Now, they’re trading Rube Goldberg death traps for cardboard boxes and genome soldiers.
The Mission Briefing
Under a massive new deal with Sony, Lipovsky and Stein’s freshly minted production company, Wonderlab, will serve as a hub for “wildly fun, commercial, and genre-bending films.” At the top of that list is the cinematic stealth-action classic that revolutionized gaming.
Industry veterans Avi and Ari Arad are on board. They will shepherd the project, ensuring the high-stakes world of Shadow Moses gets the blockbuster treatment it deserves.
Why Lipovsky and Stein?
The duo has become the “it” team for studios looking to balance spectacle with character-driven tension. Since Bloodlines cleaned up at the box office, they’ve been busier than a soldier on Alert Status, snapping up projects like The Earthling adaptation, Freaks 2 (the follow-up to their cult-hit sci-fi thriller), and a new Venom animated movie.
“Zach and Adam are thrilling storytellers, masters of visuals and suspense,” says Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group President Sanford Panitch. “We are proud to have them as part of the Sony family.”
Snake? Snake?! SNaaaaaake!
The big question remains: What happened to the old guard? Back in 2020, Dune star Oscar Isaac was famously attached to play Solid Snake. As of now, there’s no word on whether Isaac is still wearing the bandana or if Vogt-Roberts’ original script has been tossed into the incinerator. With Lipovsky and Stein taking the lead, the project may be getting a complete tactical reset.
The Vision
The directors aren’t hiding their excitement for Kojima’s “groundbreaking cinematic masterpiece.”
“We are thrilled and honored to bring Hideo Kojima’s iconic characters and unforgettable world to life,” the duo shared in a joint statement.
For fans who have been waiting decades for a live-action Snake, this is the most movement the project has seen in years. Whether you’re here for the nanomachines, the giant bipedal tanks, or to see someone hide in a box for two hours, Metal Gear Solid is finally moving out of the shadows.
Keep your eyes on the radar. With the Bloodlines team at the helm, we can at least expect the “Game Over” screen to be spectacular.
