Forget pickleball and early bird specials. The residents of New Mexico’s most scenic retirement community are about to face something much scarier than a rising property tax. Netflix has just dropped the teaser for “The Boroughs,” a supernatural/ sci-fi mystery that proves you’re never too old for a life-or-death conspiracy.

The Golden Girls (and Guys) vs. The Great Unknown

In the shimmering heat of the New Mexico desert, “The Boroughs looks like a desert oasis for the AARP crowd. But for newcomer Sam Cooper, the manicured lawns and forced cheer feel more like a high-end prison.

The vibe shifts from “relaxing” to “run for your life” when Sam has a midnight run-in with a monster. Naturally, the authorities think he’s just a confused senior. Left with no choice, Sam recruits a squad of neighborhood outcasts. Together, these heroes have to save the world before their internal batteries—or the literal ones in their hearing aids—run out.

An Absolute Powerhouse Cast

If you’re going to fight interdimensional threats, you might as well do it with an Oscar-worthy ensemble. The series features a literal “Who’s Who” of acting legends. That includes Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, and Bill Pullman. It doesn’t stop there. They are joined by Jena Malone, Carlos Miranda, Alice Kremelberg, Ed Begley Jr., Dee Wallace, and Jane Kaczmarek.

Behind the Mystery

Created by showrunners Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance), the series leans into that specific “heart-meets-horror” sweet spot.

“The heroes in The Boroughs have a few more years on them than the kids from Stranger Things,” the Duffer Brothers noted, “but they are a similarly lovable bunch of misfits.”

Directing duties are split between Ben Taylor (Sex Education), Augustine Frizzell (Euphoria), and Kyle Patrick Alvarez. They aim to guarantee the show looks as prestigious as its cast list.

Coming Soon

Hot on the heels of the premiere of their fantastic horror series “Something Bad is Going to Happen,” the Duffer Brothers (Stranger Things) are executive producing the eight-episode series, which lands on Netflix on May 21.
