If there is one thing South Korean auteur Yeon Sang-ho knows, it’s how to turn a crowded space into a buffet for the undead. The mastermind behind Train to Busan, The King of Pigs, and Parasyte: The Grey is back to ruin your travel plans with his latest infection nightmare, Colony.
Networking is a Nightmare
Forget bad coffee and boring slide decks—the biotech conference in Colony offers something much more permanent. The story follows Professor Se-jeong, who finds herself trapped in a living hell when a mutating virus is unleashed during the event.
Standard protocol? Lock the doors. The authorities seal the facility to “contain the outbreak,” leaving Se-jeong and a ragtag group of survivors to play a high-stakes game of hide-and-seek with monsters undergoing “horrific transformations.” It’s basically your average corporate retreat, just with more teeth and fewer icebreakers.
The Heavy Hitters
The film isn’t just a win for horror fans; it’s a massive homecoming for one of South Korea’s biggest stars. This marks Gianna Jun’s (My Sassy Girl) first feature film since 2015. After an eleven-year big-screen hiatus, she’s trading rom-com charm for survivalist grit. Starring alongside her is Koo Kyo-hwan, a Yeon Sang-ho regular you’ll recognize from Peninsula and Escape from Mogadishu.
Road to the Red Carpet
Before it hits the U.S. in August, Colony will make its world premiere at the Cannes International Film Festival this May. Expect the critics to be raving—and the attendees to be checking everyone’s biotech credentials in the room.
“A bold and terrifying new vision… where the infected don’t just kill you; they become something much worse.”
Presented by Showbox and produced by Wowpoint and Smilegate, Colony is shaping up to be the claustrophobic horror event of the summer. Just remember: if the conference flyer mentions “bio-innovation” and “remote location,” maybe just attend via Zoom.
In a major win for domestic gorehounds, Well Go USA Entertainment has officially nabbed the U.S. distribution rights. Mark your calendars (and stock your bunkers): the film is set to infect North American theaters on August 28, 2026.
