After months of anticipation, the trailer for Robert Eggers’ Werwulf has finally been unleashed. And it is a glorious, mud-soaked vision of pure dread.

If you’re expecting the usual Hollywood checklist of full moons, silver bullets, or tragic “woe-is-me” bites, think again. In a recent interview with Esquire, Eggers revealed he is aggressively stripping away modern cinematic tropes to rebuild the monster from its primal, terrifying roots. Set against the bleak, unforgiving backdrop of 13th-century England, the film follows a creature stalking the countryside and turning ancient folklore into a living, breathing nightmare.

A Powerhouse Ensemble (Eggers’ Frequent Fliers)

True to form, Eggers has assembled an elite cast of heavy-hitters and favorite collaborators to bring this historical horror to life. Eggers has assembled an elite cast of heavy-hitters and favorite collaborators. Leading the pack are Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp, both hot off their work on the director’s Nosferatu. They are joined by legendary screen icon Willem Dafoe, bringing back the mad-eyed intensity he famously weaponized in The Lighthouse. There’s also Ralph Ineson, whose rumbling, gravel-toned presence anchored Eggers’ breakout masterpiece, The Witch. Rounding out this stellar lineup is rising talent Bodhi Rae Breathnach, fresh off an acclaimed turn in Hamnet. With a crew this talented, the dialogue alone is bound to shake the theater walls.

A Terrifying Christmas Gift

Prepare for a bleak, bloody, and beautiful holiday season. Werwulf claws its way into theaters via Focus Features on December 25. Nothing says “Merry Christmas” quite like medieval apex predators. Watch the dark, yet stunning trailer now!
