Are you looking to stay out of the heat, skip the fireworks, but still feel a bit patriotic? We’ve got you covered. Here’s the ultimate 4th of July watch list, and we’ll even tell you where you can watch them.

The Sci-Fi Horror Heavyweight: Independence Day (1996)

While traditionally celebrated as a sci-fi action blockbuster, Roland Emmerich’s masterpiece leans heavily into creature-feature horror territory. From the suffocating dread of city-destroying shadows to the infamous, genuinely terrifying alien autopsy scene, it treats its hostile extraterrestrial invaders like unstoppable, predatory monsters. It remains the ultimate July 4th cinematic tradition. It comes complete with iconic explosions, peak Jeff Goldblum, and a presidential speech that still delivers goosebumps. You can currently stream it on Hulu and Disney+. You can also rent it on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.

The Definitive Holiday Slasher: I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

This is the ultimate 4th of July slasher. The entire plot kicks off on a Fourth of July night when teenagers accidentally hit a pedestrian, panic, and dump the body into the ocean. Exactly one year later, a slicker-wearing, hook-wielding killer crashes the town’s annual Independence Day celebration to exact some incredibly violent revenge. It is peak late-90s teen horror with a holiday backdrop that actually drives the narrative. It is currently streaming on Paramount+ and is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Google Play.

The Undisputed King of Summer Terror: Jaws (1975)

While technically a thriller, Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece is the undisputed king of summer creature features. The entire dramatic tension of the film hinges on a greedy mayor refusing to close the beaches during the lucrative Independence Day weekend, effectively ringing the dinner bell for a 25-foot great white shark. Between the beach panic, the classic John Williams score, and the quintessential coastal atmosphere, it is mandatory viewing in July. You can find it streaming on Starz or rent it on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.

The Found-Footage Nightmare: The Bay (2012)

Directed by Academy Award-winner Barry Levinson, this criminally underrated found-footage eco-horror takes place entirely during a picturesque 4th of July celebration in a small Maryland town on the Chesapeake Bay. The festivities are violently cut short when a swarm of mutated, flesh-eating isopods infects the local water supply. It’s claustrophobic, deeply unsettling, and will make you think twice before jumping into any bodies of water this weekend. It is streaming completely free on Tubi, Pluto TV, and The Roku Channel, and can be rented on Amazon Prime Video or Apple TV.

The Gory B-Movie Satire: Uncle Sam (1996)

If you want your holiday horror served with a massive side of 90s camp and dark satire, this is your movie. Directed by William Lustig and written by Larry Cohen, the film follows a deceased, abusive Gulf War veteran whose body is brought back to his hometown just in time for Independence Day. Naturally, he rises from the grave, steals a giant Uncle Sam parade costume, and begins brutally murdering anyone he deems unpatriotic. It is pure, unadulterated B-movie fun, streaming on Shudder and AMC+, and available for free on Tubi and Pluto TV.

The Dystopian Holiday: The Purge: Election Year (2016)

While almost any movie in this franchise fits the holiday’s thematic vibe, this entry leans hardest into twisted, weaponized patriotism. The film is packed with striking political imagery, featuring mercenaries dressed in historical revolutionary gear, Abraham Lincoln masks, and Uncle Sam outfits hunting citizens down on the streets. It’s action-heavy, fast-paced, and deeply cynical. You can grab this one on Demand via Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, and Fandango at Home.

Skip the crowds, kick up your feet, and celebrate the 4th of July with these killer movies!
