Film and television producer, Todd Garner (The Possession of Hannah Grace(2018), Haunt(2019)) of Broken Road Productions is teaming up with writers, Heath Amodio(The Heathens, Foretold) and Cullen Bunn(Harrow County, Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe), to give us upcoming comic, Copycat. The concept was something Garner said he’d been “sitting on for a bit” because “after working on movies based on graphic novels like Hellboy, I’ve been intrigued by the possibility of creating a new comic book hero.”
Copycat’s protagonist is Sarah, a talented ER nurse, with the unique gift of diagnosing her patients with just one touch. Unfortunately, her power comes with a painful price, as she experiences the same suffering as her patients. In her pursuit to save Emma, a woman with extraordinary abilities, Sarah inadvertently gains Emma’s enhanced strength. Determined to uncover the mystery of Emma’s murder, Sarah sets out on a perilous journey that brings her face to face with a band of hunters with super-human abilities. As she battles for survival, Sarah acquires the powers of her opponents to survive and eventually defeat them.
So she’s sort of like if X-Men’s Rogue decided to become a nurse.
Amodio and Bunn have their own production company, Hustle & Heart Films. Both companies have a passion to “adapt concepts across all mediums like comics, television, film, and tabletop games (with producing partner Aengus McLoone),” Amodio says. “Cullen and I connect with people we admire, and collaborate to tell great stories.” Bunn isn’t a stranger to film adaptation as his comic series, The Empty Man, was given the film treatment in 2002. As someone who enjoyed the comics, I was excited, but cautious when I heard about the film adaptation. Unfortunately, I was not a fan of the film. If you haven’t read the comics, perhaps you will like it better than I did. However, I do sing Bunn’s praises as the comic series is a creepy, complex mystery of hive mind panic becoming mental manifestation into the sentience of The Empty Man. It has some gnarly horror visuals too.
Their new Copycat series is suppose to be action-packed with dynamic characters to keep you attached to their story. It was introduced through publisher, Source Point Press, at the Cleveland Fan Expo just recently on March 24th, 2023 with a collector’s edition of the first issue, featuring exclusive cover art by Joshua Werner (“Winchester Mystery House”, “Crossbone Skelly”). So if you’re a collector, keep your eyes out for that edition and check out this comic!
