It’s officially happening. Blumhouse, Atomic Monster, and Behaviour Interactive have officially chosen their champion to direct the upcoming live-action adaptation of the mega-hit asymmetrical horror game, Dead by Daylight. The man holding the flashlight? Thordur Palsson.
The Icelandic director is best known for creating and directing “The Valhalla Murders” (Netflix’s first-ever Icelandic original series) and his atmospheric 2025 psychological horror debut, The Damned. He’s currently wrapping up a disaster miniseries called Avalanche, but his next job will involve navigating a much more intentional kind of catastrophe.
“There is no better moment than the tenth anniversary to share this news,” said Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse. “Thordur is the filmmaker we trust to carry Dead by Daylight from the screen you play on to the big screen you watch in theaters.”
For the Uninitiated: What is Dead by Daylight?
If you’ve spent the last decade avoiding the gaming world, Dead by Daylight is a chaotic, stress-inducing multiplayer survival game. The setup is simple but brutal: five players enter an arena. Four play as helpless survivors trying to fix generators and escape, while the fifth plays as a horrific, unstoppable killer whose sole job is to hunt them down and impale them on meat hooks.
While the game now boasts a massive roster of licensed horror icons (from Michael Myers to Freddy Krueger), it launched in 2016 with three legendary OGs who are almost certain to make their cinematic debut:
-The Trapper: A hulking brute who loves strategically placing rusty bear traps.
-The Wraith: A ghostly figure who uses a cloaking bell to turn invisible right before ruining your day.
-The Hillbilly: A horribly disfigured, chainsaw-wielding terror who loves a good sprint.
Video Game Movies Aren’t a Joke Anymore
There was a time when slapping a video game logo on a movie poster was a one-way ticket to the bargain bin. Not anymore. Video game adaptations have officially become Hollywood’s favorite cash cows.
Between The Super Mario Bros. Movie crossing the billion-dollar mark, A Minecraft Movie dominating the box office, and horror-centric adaptations like Five Nights at Freddy’s and Iron Lung pulling in massive profits, a Dead by Daylight film isn’t just a fun project for fans—it’s a certified gold mine waiting to happen, Variety reports.
No word yet on whether the movie will feature survivors crouching repeatedly to taunt the killer at the exit gates, but with Palsson at the helm, we can at least expect a beautifully shot, incredibly tense slasher. Stay tuned.
