We’ve got great news for both horror and gaming fans! Mark “Markiplier” Fischbach has just unleashed his adaptation of Iron Lung on YouTube!

His debut directorial feature, one of the most buzzed-about horror films of the year, hasn’t just survived its theatrical run. It absolutely conquered it. It brought in over $51 million against a meager, self-funded production budget of just $3 million. The indie sci-fi horror creep-fest has officially cemented itself as one of the top five highest-grossing horror films of 2026.

Based on David Szymanski’s 2022 video game, the film is a masterclass in the “less is more” school of cinematic dread. It proves that audiences are utterly starved for high-concept, original horror. It doesn’t hurt that it broke the world record for fake blood (a casual 80,000 gallons).

Bypassing the Studio Gatekeepers

For months, fans have been desperately refreshing streaming platforms, waiting for a digital drop. As it turns out, Fischbach wasn’t just looking for a platform to host his movie—he was rewriting the entire Hollywood distribution playbook.

Selling a film digitally usually requires partnering with massive studio systems or traditional middleman “aggregators.” Mark looked at that red tape and decided to cut it completely. He negotiated directly with the heads of Google and YouTube to become an official digital aggregator himself.

“I’ve been taking the extra steps to work out this deal where I can become this aggregator so that other people can benefit from it,” Mark explained. “I’ll have the ability to get movies up for sale on YouTube.”

By securing this status, Mark isn’t just releasing his own project. He is actively building a pipeline to help future independent filmmakers bypass traditional studio gatekeepers. Opening the door for them to sell their movies directly to audiences through YouTube Movies. It’s a massive play. One that could transform YouTube from a repository for “videos” into a legitimate, democratized frontier for independent cinema.

The “Homegrown” Edition

In perhaps the most delightfully on-brand “Markiplier” move of the entire production, the physical release of Iron Lung is going fully DIY.

Forget outsourcing to massive, clinical disc-pressing plants. Mark has openly discussed plans to self-distribute the DVD and Blu-ray copies using an automated robotic duplication machine set up right in his home. Yes, you read that correctly. When you finally get your hands on a premium physical copy of Iron Lung, there is a very high probability that it was born of a whirring machine just a few feet from the desk where he records.

What Is Iron Lung Actually About?

(For those who completely missed the theatrical wave)

Set in a bleak, terrifying future where an event known as “The Quiet Rapture” has caused every star and habitable planet in the universe to vanish without a trace, humanity’s dying remnants live on desolate space stations.

The film follows a lone prisoner (Fischbach) tasked with a suicide mission. In a future where the stars have vanished in an event called “The Quiet Rapture,” the only hope for resources lies in an ocean of blood on a desolate moon. Armed with only a camera and a map, he is welded into a sub that was never meant to go so deep.

The Wait is Officially Over

No more waiting for theater expansions, and no more dealing with sold-out crowds. The ultimate creator-owned horror triumph is finally coming directly to your favorite screen. Stream or buy Iron Lung right now on YouTube Movies!
