David Cronenberg (The Fly), a true master of body horror, returns to the big screen with his new film, The Shrouds, which is opening in theaters this April.
The trailer for the film teases a time when morbid curiosity meets technology. It reveals a man who struggles to grieve his lost love while trying to help others cope. Unfortunately, things go very wrong.
The filmid set in an eerie, near-future. A tech-entrepreneur named Karsh (Vincent Cassel) has developed a new software. It allows the bereaved to witness the gradual decay of loved ones buried in the earth. Karsh still reels from the loss of his wife (Diane Kruger) to cancer. He falls into a peculiar sexual relationship with his wife’s sister (also Kruger). Using his ‘shroud’ technology, vandalized graves begin to threaten his enterprise. And he uncovers a potentially vast conspiracy.
“Written following the death of the director’s wife, the new film from David Cronenberg is a profoundly personal reckoning with grief and a descent into noir-tinged dystopia. It sets the story in an ominous world of self-driving cars, data theft, and A.I. personal assistants. Offering Cronenberg’s customary balance of malevolence and wit, The Shrouds is a sly and thought-provoking consideration of the corporeal and the digital, the mortal and the infinite.” Janus Films states.
Guy Pearce and Sandrine Holt also star in the film. True to Cronenberg’s style, The Shrouds received an “R” rating for strong sexual content, graphic nudity, language, and some violent content.” Expect a mature and unsettling experience.
Cronenberg explores themes of grief, technology, and mortality in this film, blending these elements with his signature style. The film promises a unique and thought-provoking cinematic experience when it debuts on April 18 in New York and Los Angeles before expanding nationwide on April 25, 2025.
