Vertical Entertainment and Protozoa Pictures have unveiled the official teaser trailer for Pendulum, a psychological horror feature marking the directorial debut of Black Swan screenwriter Mark Heyman.
Produced by brilliant filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, the film has officially earned an R rating for strong bloody violence. However, it also includes drug use, nudity, and language ahead of its nationwide theatrical debut this January.
An All-Star Cast
Pendulum features an all-star cast of easily recognizable talent. Leading the cast are Joseph Gordon-Levitt and “Bridgerton” star Phoebe Dynevor. They are joined by Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook) and “The Walking Dead” star Norman Reedus.
Trauma, Cult Dynamics, and New Mexico Paranoia
The narrative follows a married couple, Patrick (Gordon-Levitt) and Abigail (Dynevor). They travel to a secluded, new-age retreat in New Mexico. They are seeking solace and recovery after a devastating personal trauma.
Patrick is willing to do whatever it takes to help his wife heal. However, his hope quickly turns to suspicion. While Abigail falls deeper under the spell of the retreat’s enigmatic leader (Weaver), Patrick becomes isolated. Psychological tension mounts, and the couple is forced to question the sanctuary’s motives. Do its spiritual practices really offer enlightenment, or does it mask a sinister force waiting to consume them both?
Inspired by True Family Lore
For Heyman, who wrote and directed the feature, Pendulum represents an intensely personal project rooted in his own background. The filmmaker shared that his family lore directly inspired the story. And get this, it was filmed on location where he grew up and where the real-life events occurred.
“This movie is deeply personal and inspired by my family lore,” Bloody-Disgusting quotes Heyman’s statement. “Shooting it in New Mexico, where I grew up and the real events took place, elevated every scene and made it all the more surreal. Add to that a cast firing on all cylinders, and you have a horror movie I’m immensely proud of and excited to unleash on audiences come the new year. What better way to ring in 2027 than with a freaky head trip?”
Backed by Aronofsky’s signature visual production style through Protozoa Pictures and anchored by an exceptional cast, Pendulum promises to deliver a surreal, nerve-shredding thriller. One designed to serve as the ultimate head trip for horror fans on New Year’s Day, 2027.
