Move over, traditional movie monsters! There is a new, surprisingly plush terror dominating the indie box office. And it wears a coat of blinding orange fur. BUDDY, the twisted horror film featuring a deceptively cheerful children’s show mascot, has galloped past every reasonable forecast to secure the highest opening weekend of the year for any film playing on under 1,800 screens.

From Roadside Attractions and Saban Films, the unhinged feature pulled in a whopping estimated $5.36 million across just 1,258 theaters on its opening night. It has already doubled initial industry projections. This proves that audiences are more than ready to watch their childhood nostalgia get shredded to bits.

Record-Breaking Bloodshed for Indie Cinema

This neon-hued juggernaut is not just turning heads; it is shattering long-standing distributor records. The film represents Roadside Attractions’ highest opening-weekend performance since before the pandemic and the second-largest opening in the company’s 23-year history. For Saban Films, it marks the single biggest theatrical debut in their 12-year trajectory. BUDDY now proudly stands shoulder to shoulder with recent breakout indie-horror titles like Terrifier and Clown in a Cornfield, confirming that offbeat, lower-budget genre cinema is currently carrying the theatrical experience on its back.

Gen Z Trades Doomscrolling for Mascot Mayhem

The demographic driving this runaway success is overwhelmingly young and eager for a shared theatrical panic. Exit polls reveal that a staggering 83 percent of ticket buyers were under 35.

Driven by a desperate craving for original storytelling, physical escapism, and communal screaming, younger moviegoers turned the release into an event. The film’s digital footprint was equally massive ahead of release. It’s already gained over 450,000 social media followers. And the trailer has gotten a staggering 150 million views. This leaves the online engagement metrics of traditional studio hits like Evil Dead Rise sitting in the dust.

Critics and Distributors Embrace the Chaos

Distributors jumped on the project when it debuted at Sundance. They are praising director Casper Kelly’s reliance on wildly imaginative practical effects over soulless digital polish. BUDDY is currently sitting pretty with an 88 percent Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film’s authentic, total-WTF blend of absurdity and visceral horror-comedy is hitting a sweet spot with critics and fans alike.

Starring Cristin Milioti, Patton Oswalt, and Michael Shannon, BUDDY takes the wholesome, sing-along world of vintage kids’ television, introduces one stubborn child who refuses to play along, and lets the orange beast unleash absolute hell.
