You may have thought that surviving a kid’s daily Barney binge was the ultimate test of endurance. However, the neon orange unicorn, Buddy, is a real monster.
Roadside Attractions and Saban Films, alongside indie horror hitmakers BoulderLight Pictures and Low Spark Films, have unleashed a brand-new teaser and commercial for BUDDY. Signaling a complete and utter execution of wholesome Saturday morning nostalgia.
Marching into theaters tomorrow, the horror-comedy takes the hyper-colored world of public-access children’s television and drenches it in unhinged carnage.
Sing Along or Face the Feral Mascot
On the surface, It’s Buddy! looks like a sugary, synth-pop fever dream designed to hold kids hostage in front of the television. The show features synchronized child performers, infectious sing-alongs, and an aggressively neon-orange unicorn named Buddy. However, he’s not really the cuddliest creature. He enforces state-mandated cheerfulness with cult-like intensity.
However, behind the candy-coated studio walls lies a zero-tolerance policy for insubordination. The moment a rogue child performer dares to break character and reject the script, the cheery music cuts out, and Buddy proves that he handles constructive criticism about as well as a rabid predator. What follows is a blood-drenched rampage as the anthropomorphic mascot hunts down everyone trapped inside the locked-down soundstage.
The Mastermind Behind “Too Many Cooks” Strikes Again
A premise this gloriously unhinged requires a director who speaks fluent surrealist chaos, and horror-comedy savant Casper Kelly fits the bill perfectly. The mind behind Adult Swim’s viral fever dream Too Many Cooks helms the madness, co-writing the screenplay alongside Jamie King. Backed by a heavy-hitting producing team including Tyler Davidson, Drew Sykes, Raphael Margules, J.D. Lifshitz, and Tracy Rosenblum—with financial support from Sipur Studios and Substance—the project delivers an uncompromisingly wild subversion of children’s entertainment.
A Prestige Cast Plunged into Mascot Carnage
Tackling a story that seamlessly flips between broad satire and visceral terror takes serious acting muscle, and BUDDY boasts an absurdly stacked ensemble. Cristin Milioti (The Penguin, Palm Springs) and Oscar nominee Michael Shannon (Knives Out) lead the charge through the studio nightmare, flanked by comedy heavyweights Patton Oswalt (The Sandman) and Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele). Topher Grace (That ’70s Show) and Delaney Quinn (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You) round out the cast.
