This slow-burn arthouse thriller plunges viewers into a sinister fusion of psychological dread, parasitic terror, and modern ecological horror.
Something Wicked in the Water
The film follows the life of a cop investigating a car crash as it entangles with that of a woman who experienced an inexplicable encounter. As their storylines collide, something ancient and otherworldly stirs beneath the ripples. This throws the town into quiet chaos.
Drawing heavy inspiration from Irish selkie folklore, The Otherkind bypasses standard splashy gore in favor of creeping paranoia. It explores how a single tainted source, the town’s water supply, can silently infect and reshape an entire community.
Siren Calls and Indie Grit
The film marks the feature directorial debut of writer-director Mary C. Russell, who previously turned heads with her acclaimed 2015 slasher short Carved.
Bringing the story from page to screen, however, required five years of sheer grit from producer Caroline O’Meara. She’s known for her work on H2O: Add Water. She also pulls double duty with an on-screen role. Together, the duo balances a chilling narrative with striking landscapes, mind-bending sound design, and a subtle nod to environmental stewardship.
A Festival Darling Takes the Plunge
Before making its digital debut, The Otherkind racked up serious credibility across the festival circuit. It took home Best Horror/Thriller at the Chicago Film Frenzy, as well as the Blood, Sweat & Fears Award at Sin City Horror Fest. IT also won Best Indie Film at the LA International Art Film Fest.
Executive-produced by Gary and Karen LaBranche, the film features compelling lead performances by Rebekah Kennedy. She’s joined by Lestonja Diaz, Marc Anthony Samuel, and Paris Dylan. The strong supporting cast includes Muneeb Rehman, Luciana Faulhaber, and Shylo Molina. Radio listeners will recognize KCRW icon Chris Douridas lending his distinct voice as the local newsreader, anchoring an offbeat cast of characters in a lakeside nightmare you won’t easily shake.
