This September, comic book lovers and environmental avengers alike can celebrate the grossest revival in animated history. Acclaimed Syracuse-based indie publisher AHOY Comics is officially unleashing the brand-new Toxic Crusaders trade paperback comic book collection.

Spearheaded by The Nib founder and two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist Matt Bors, behind his blistering revival of Troma Entertainment’s iconic Toxic Avenger in comics. He’s joined by breakthrough writing talent Tristan Wright. This graphic novel breathes wild new life into the beloved, slime-covered franchise.

The Unlikely Evolution of an Exploitation Classic

To truly appreciate the rebirth of the Toxic Crusaders, you have to look back at their bizarrely brilliant pop-culture origins. The characters originated in Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz’s legendary 1984 Troma cult classic, The Toxic Avenger. The original movie was an uncompromising, splatter-filled horror-comedy designed for midnight movie audiences. Then, in the 1990s, an unexpected miracle happened: Toxie was sanitized and reimagined as a superhero. Then, in 1991, the animated Toxic Crusaders television series hit Saturday-morning airwaves. It turned gruesome mutant violence into a hilarious, anti-pollution eco-message. It came complete with an iconic toy line, video games, and a passionate fan base.

New Mutants and Nostalgic Slime Collide

The newly collected trade paperback honors that classic 1990s environmental-warrior spirit while pushing the satire to hilarious new heights. The Toxic Avenger leads his dependable squad of hideous mutants. That includes the radioactive No-Zone, the dog-hybrid Junkyard, and the plant-controlling Major Disaster. They fight to keep Tromaville safe from pollution-obsessed alien invaders and corrupt corporate overlords. Adding a fresh dynamic to the legendary lineup, the new release also introduces Fungirl, an all-new character who joins the ranks to add even more chaotic energy to the team’s eco-friendly crusade.

A Collector’s Item Packed With Satirical Might

Combining Bors’ sharp political wit and masterclass satirical storytelling with Wright’s fresh narrative energy, AHOY Comics has crafted a graphic novel that appeals to die-hard Troma completionists and modern comic fans alike. Packed with vibrant, radioactive artwork and unstoppable dark comedy, this compilation captures the pure, unfiltered joy of gross-out cartoon nostalgia. Readers looking to dive back into the toxic sludge can grab their copy of the Toxic Crusaders trade paperback when it hits store shelves and digital platforms nationwide on September 23.
