A powerful and timely true crime thriller is headed your way! Christian Swegal makes his directorial debut with Sovereign, set to hit theaters this July, following its World Premiere at the Tribeca Festival on June 8. To get you hyped, a new and compelling clip has just been released. It offers a glimpse into the intense drama!
Inspired By True Events
Inspired by true events, Sovereign is described as a tense and provocative true crime thriller. It centers on a father and his teenage son, Jerry (Nick Offerman) and Joseph Kane (Jacob Tremblay). The two adhere to the Sovereign Citizen belief system. The Sovereign Citizen movement is a fiercely anti-establishment worldview rooted in a profound distrust of government authority.
Jerry and Joseph travel across the country. They deliver legal seminars and challenging systems that they believe have failed them. However, their journey inevitably brings them into direct conflict with Police Chief Jim Bouchart (Dennis Quaid). This clash sets off a tragic chain of events, forcing all involved to reckon with power, principle, and the very limits of freedom.
The newly released clip shows Offerman’s Jerry Kane passionately delivering a sermon loaded with anti-government propaganda, offering a chilling glimpse of the film’s central conflict.
A Stellar Cast
Beyond the incredible trio of Quaid, Offerman, and Tremblay, the film features a strong supporting cast including Thomas Mann (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl), Martha Plimpton (The Goonies, Parenthood), and Nancy Travis (Last Man Standing).
Writer, director Christian Swegal is known for his diverse work, having co-written the feature film Proud Mary for Screen Gems. In 2019, he even collaborated with legendary director Werner Herzog to develop “Fordlandia” for AMC.
Swegal produces alongside Nick Moceri. The film boasts an impressive roster of executive producers, including Tom Ortenberg, Jessica Rose, Matthew Shreder, Grant Mohrman, and Colin Bates, along with others.
