Get ready for a chilling dive into psychological horror! Dark Star Pictures has officially acquired the U.S. distribution rights to What Happened to Dorothy Bell?, an upcoming found footage horror film that terrified audiences at its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in 2024.
Unraveling a Mysterious Past
Written and directed by Danny Villanueva Jr., the film centers on Ozzie Gray (Asya Meadows), a young woman struggling with her mental health. While searching for answers, Ozzie uncovers an unsettling family secret that involves an attack by her grandmother, Dorothy Bell.
Ozzie’s investigation leads her back to a library in her hometown, a place long tied to a sinister urban legend. There, Ozzie must confront buried secrets and an unnerving supernatural presence that lurks in the shadows.
The film has been described as a genre-defying exploration of generational trauma, mental illness, and the ways families conceal pain in the name of protection.
Villanueva Jr. employs a blend of found footage formats, including video diaries, grainy security camera footage, and unsettling vintage camcorder tapes, to create an atmosphere of intense disorientation and dread.
A Cast of Horror Veterans
The film features horror veterans such as Lisa Wilcox (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 and 5) and Michael Hargrove (Candyman). Rounding out the cast are Asya Meadows, Arlene Armone Bibbs, and Steven Alonte.
Michael Repsch, President of Dark Star Pictures, praised the film, stating, “What Happened to Dorothy Bell? is a bold and unsettling vision that pushes the boundaries of found footage horror. Danny Villanueva Jr. masterfully blends psychological depth with supernatural terror, crafting a story that resonates long after the credits roll.”
Prepare for a found footage experience that promises to be as mentally unsettling as it is terrifying. The trailer will arrive soon ahead of this chilling film’s October release. But, will you uncover the truth of What Happened to Dorothy Bell?
