Big news for streamers! Amazon’s ad-supported Freevee app is set to shut down. However, don’t worry; all your favorite Freevee content isn’t disappearing – the Prime Video platform is absorbing it.
Your Free Content Isn’t Going Anywhere
Freevee recently informed its users directly within the app that the service “will be accessible until August 2025.” After that, Prime Video will become the “new exclusive home for Freevee TV shows, movies, and Live TV.”
This means you’ll still be able to watch all your beloved Freevee Originals, such as “Jury Duty” and “Bosch: Legacy,” along with its extensive library of hit movies, TV shows, and live 24/7 entertainment channels. The best part? You won’t need a Prime subscription to access this free content.
Amazon has been operating the Freevee app (formerly IMDb TV) since 2019, and it hinted late last year that it’d be phasing out the Freevee brand.
An Amazon spokesperson confirmed to FOX Business that “There will be no change to the content available to Prime members, and a vast offering of free streaming content will still be accessible for non-Prime members, including select Originals from Amazon MGM Studios, a variety of licensed movies and series, and a broad library of FAST channels – all available on Prime Video.”
The company stated back in November that this move is all about delivering “a simpler viewing experience for customers.”
Prime Video’s Evolving Landscape
This shift comes as Amazon continues to beef up Prime Video’s offerings. Earlier in 2024, Prime Video also introduced an additional fee for customers who want to watch content on the platform completely ad-free.
So, while the Freevee app itself is going away, the content you love will still be available, just in a new, streamlined location on Prime Video.
