Fans of the “Dexter” franchise have a mixed bag of news today. While the prequel series, “Dexter: Original Sin,” will not be returning for a second season, despite its popularity. “Dexter: Resurrection,” however, will continue, Variety reports.
The End of ‘Original Sin’
Despite an earlier announcement of renewal, sources tell Variety that Paramount has decided not to move forward with a second season of the prequel. The show, which followed a young Dexter Morgan in 1991, wrapped up its first season this past February. The decision to cancel comes on the heels of the Skydance-Paramount merger, with new leadership reportedly looking to streamline the content slate.
“Dexter: Original Sin” transports viewers back to 1991 Miami, a vibrant backdrop for Dexter Morgan’s formative years. The first season delves into Dexter’s transition from a seemingly ordinary student to a burgeoning avenging serial killer. Patrick Gibson steps into the iconic role, portraying a young Dexter (played by Patrick Gibson) grappling with his burgeoning bloodlust. The series chronicles his struggle to control his “dark passenger,” the insatiable urge to kill.
Under the guidance of his father, Harry (Christian Slater), Dexter learns to channel his violent impulses. He must go by a carefully constructed “Code.” It dictates that he target those deemed deserving of elimination from society while staying off the radar of law enforcement. This proves to be particularly challenging as Dexter begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department. It places him close to the very people he must evade.

The Future of ‘Resurrection’
On a brighter note, Paramount is moving ahead with plans for a second season of “Dexter: Resurrection.” The new series, which brings Michael C. Hall back as the iconic serial killer, has been a hit with both critics and viewers. The premiere episode drew 4.4 million viewers, and the first season has a strong 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The new leadership team at Paramount is reportedly focusing on “Dexter: Resurrection” and Michael C. Hall’s role as they look to continue the franchise, Variety reports. This move signals a clear direction for the future of the series, refocusing the spotlight on the main character that fans know and love.
“Dexter: Resurrection” picks up just weeks after Dexter (Michael C. Hall) was shot in the “Dexter: New Blood” finale. Dexter awakens from a coma only to find that Harrison (Jack Alcott) has vanished. The weight of what he put his son through weighs heavy on Dexter. He sets off for the streets of New York City, determined to find Harrison and, somehow, make things right.
This season Dexter must watch his step, Angel is on his trail and things get complicated when Dexter is introduced to a group of serial killers.
