I’ve been itching to see Zach Cregger’s Weapons, but I was also dreading it. So many super hyped movies crash and burn, leaving me totally bummed out. Last night, I finally watched it, and I have to say that I was not disappointed!
The premise is bone-chilling: all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanishes in a single night. The community is left desperate, wondering who—or what—is behind the disappearances.
First off, kids in horror movies always freak me out (hello, Damien and Gage!). Weapons is packed with them. Everything about these kids is spooky as hell. I was seriously impressed by young Cary Christopher’s performance as Alex. He absolutely crushed it.
The lead actors, Julia Garner as the suspected teacher, Justine, and Josh Brolin as the determined father, Archer, both delivered killer, emotional performances.
No horror movie is complete without some brutal deaths, and in Weapons, one scene stands out above the rest. Clayton Farris’s character, Terry, meets the most barbaric and disgusting end imaginable. Farris actually warned me during our interview. However, I was still not prepared. I literally gagged—something I never do! I was honestly thrilled! I so rarely ever get a deep reaction to movies these days, so when one truly affects me, in any way, it’s fantastic.
For half the movie, the kids’ disappearance is a total mystery. When the truth is revealed, it’s something I never saw coming; that’s a miracle in itself. Zach Cregger has created a fantastic film with a chilling story, non-stop action, and impressive special effects. This is the movie that will define his career, and he should be incredibly proud.
To sum it all up, Weapons is a must-see for every horror fan. It’s got everything you could want: a fresh, unique story that keeps you guessing from start to finish. It builds tension perfectly and gives gorehounds the blood and guts they crave. If you can’t tell by now, I absolutely LOVED it! You can bet it will be on our annual “Best of” list.
