Cambodia’s official submission for Best International Film at the 98th Academy Awards is the chilling film, Tenement. A brand-new trailer for the chilling movie just dropped. It gives us a glimpse at the dark secrets lurking inside a mysterious apartment building.
The film was written and directed by Inrasothythep Neth and Sokyou Chea and stars Thanet Thorn, Yoshihiko Hosoda, and Katsuya Maiguma.
The story centers on a Japanese-Cambodian manga artist who travels to Cambodia with her boyfriend after her mother passes away. She moves into the apartment where her late mother once lived to try to learn more about her past.
What starts as a journey into the past quickly devolves into seriously creepy stuff. Bizarre things begin to happen. Also, the residents start acting way too friendly. The residents are involved in something ruly dark. They’re preparing the newcomer to be a new host for the building’s evil spirit before the entity decides to start killing them all.
It’s pretty fascinating that a horror film like Tenement is the country’s pick for the Oscar race. Each non-U.S. country can only submit one film for consideration. While the film competes in a genre not typically seen in this category, its selection demonstrates Cambodia’s faith in the movie’s artistic merit and intense storytelling.
Keep an eye on the schedule: the Academy will announce the shortlist on December 16, and the final five nominees for Best International Feature will be revealed on January 22.
You won’t have to wait long to check out Cambodia’s spooky Oscar hopeful. Dark Sky Films is bringing Tenement to the U.S. in theaters and on VOD on October 24, 2025. Perfect timing for a pre-Halloween movie night! Watch the new trailer now, and get ready for Tenement to hit screens later this month!
