One of the most anticipated movies of the year has just landed on Netflix: Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein. Last night, I popped a bag of popcorn, put on PJs, and sat back to see what all the buzz is about.
As far as directors go, you don’t get better than del Toro. He has proved once again that he can bring incredible stories to life with elegance and stunning visuals. The laboratory, the estate, and the outside world, covered in blankets of snow, are breathtaking. Del Toro even transforms the dead bodies into works of art. And his use of color and camera work are practically poetry. What I would give to have a tenth of his talent.
Based on Mary Shelly’s novel, Frankenstein is split into two parts. The first half is from Victor Frankenstein’s point of view. The second, from the monster. This was a brilliant choice. It allows the audience to see both points of view while revealing their true nature. This plays into the idea that Dr. Frankenstein is actually the monster, and that the creature, while fearsome, is good, though misunderstood.
Oscar Issac gives an incredible performance, demonstrating obsession and passion. His intensity pulls you in and leaves you on the edge of your seat. Mia Goth’s Elizabeth is enchanting and sweet. As for Jacob Elordi’s performance as the creature, bravo. The way he emotes emotion with barely saying a word is incredible. He couldn’t have done any better. The creature’s design is beautiful in its own way. Though he is stitched together, he has a beautiful face and shape. I believe this was intended to help viewers see him in a positive light, making us more sympathetic toward him.
Though much of the movie is dark and forboding, it has a beauty and richness that is unforgettable. You can see del Toro’s passion for the project in every single scene, and that always amazes me. I can honestly say that Guillermo del Toro’s creations —the worlds brought to life —have never left me disappointed. The man is a true master of his art.
