Battle Royale, Kinji Fukasaku’s controversial, genre-defining masterpiece, arrives in stunning 4K with both cuts of the film and an arsenal of new and legacy special features.
Lionsgate is set to honor the 25th anniversary of director Kinji Fukasaku’s uncompromising dystopian thriller, Battle Royale, with an exclusive 4K Ultra HD™ + Blu-ray™ + Digital Steelbook® edition. This definitive release marks the first time the seminal film has been presented in 4K with Dolby Vision® in North America, restoring the film’s shocking immediacy and brutal emotional power.
The film’s plot, adapted from Koushun Takami’s novel, remains one of the most savage and influential in modern cinema. Set in a near-future Japan gripped by economic collapse, mass unemployment, and soaring juvenile delinquency, the government institutes the draconian BR Law.
The law dictates that each year, a random 9th-grade class is abducted and sent to a remote, deserted island. There, they are equipped with exploding neck collars, issued a random weapon (ranging from a Uzi to a pan lid), and forced to hunt and kill each other until only one survivor remains.
Battle Royale stars Tatsuya Fujiwara, Aki Maeda, Tarô Yamamoto, Chiaki Kuriyama (Kill Bill), and screen legend Takeshi Kitano (Ghost in the Shell) as the cold, cynical teacher overseeing the carnage. The film remains a cornerstone of dystopian storytelling, whose themes of inter-generational mistrust and survival competition directly inspired countless subsequent projects, including The Hunger Games and the entire “Battle Royale” video game genre.
The anniversary edition, featuring exclusive new artwork by acclaimed artist Oliver Barrett, is available in two exclusive formats:
