After calling Netflix “home” for years, the hit fantasy-horror series “Supernatural” is packing up its historic 15 seasons and moving. The entire 327-episode series will depart Netflix on December 17, 2025. It will then arrive on Peacock starting December 22, 2025. This marks the end of the streaming giant’s long-term licensing deal.

Starring Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, “Supernatural” has become an iconic, beloved show. It is famous for having one of the most dedicated fan bases in television history.

History

“Supernatural” premiered in 2005 on The WB (later The CW), created by Eric Kripke with a deceptively simple premise: two brothers traveling the country in a 1967 Impala to hunt monsters and search for their missing father (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

  • The Kripke Era (Seasons 1-5): The early seasons were defined by a “monster-of-the-week” format that blended urban legends and classic horror cinema. This period culminated in the show’s original planned ending. However, the massive Biblical Apocalypse storyline, which saw the brothers fight Lucifer and Michael, wasn’t the end after all. This arc is still widely considered the series’ creative peak.

  • The Post-Apocalypse Years (Seasons 6-15): Despite Kripke’s departure after Season 5, the show continued for ten more seasons. It constantly reinvented itself. The scope expanded dramatically, moving past demons and ghosts to introduce massive new threats like the Leviathans, the Men of Letters, and The Darkness (Amara). Eventually it lead to Dean and Sam confronting God (Chuck Shurley) himself. The show became the longest-running American live-action fantasy TV series.

The core of “Supernatural’s” enduring success lies not in its mythology but in the unbreakable yet often strained relationship between the Winchester brothers, Sam and Dean, and the other characters that brought the show heart, like Bobby and Cas.

The Stars

Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles)

Dean is the loyal, protective older brother. Defined by his love for classic rock, an obsession with his Impala, and a willingness to make any sacrifice for his family, Dean’s character arc is rooted in his fear of abandonment and his struggle with destiny. He often embodies the classic blue-collar hunter, prioritizing the simple family unit over the cosmic battles they face. His famous line, “I’m the one who grips you tight and raises you from perdition,” perfectly encapsulates his protective role.

Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki)

Sam is the thoughtful, compassionate younger brother who yearned for a “normal” life away from the family business. His character is marked by his desire to escape hunting and live a regular life. However, his repeated struggle against corruption by darkness pull him back in. Sam is the researcher and the empathetic anchor, often pushing Dean toward emotional vulnerability while also serving as the voice of reason.

Castiel (Misha Collins)

Introduced in Season 4, Castiel is the fan-favorite angel who pulled Dean out of Hell. Cas started as a stoic, detached soldier of Heaven. He gradually learned about humanity, becoming a series regular and the brothers’ steadfast best friend—or, as they call him, their family. His journey embodies themes of faith, sacrifice, and the search for identity beyond preordained destiny.

Bobby (Jim Beaver)

Robert “Bobby” Singer was introduced as an old friend of John Winchester, but quickly evolved into the true paternal figure for Sam and Dean. His gruff demeanor, encyclopedic knowledge of the occult, and famous catchphrase, “Idjits!” cemented his place in the hearts of fans.

The Legacy of the Fandom

“Supernatural’s” fan base, affectionately known as the “SPN Family,” is one of the most passionate in entertainment. They were pivotal in the show’s longevity, sustaining the series through conventions, charity work, and relentless social media presence.

While the streaming home is changing, the legacy of the Winchesters’ journey—a dark, funny, and profoundly emotional saga about two brothers constantly fighting the good fight—will continue in its new home on Peacock.

If you’re needing a “Supernatural fix,” check out the series “The Boys,” which sees a reunion of many “Supernatural” stars, including Ackles as “Soldier Boy.” He is joined by “Supernatural’s” Jim Beaver, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and more.
