The long-awaited film adaptation, The Thing with Feathers, will make its theatrical debut this month. The film, which delves into the horrors of loss, stars Benedict Cumberbatch.

Written and directed by Dylan Southern, the film is based on the acclaimed novella, Grief Is the Thing with Feathers, by Max Porter.

The movie plunges into the life of Dad (Benedict Cumberbatch). He is suddenly left to raise his two young sons after the death of his wife. As the father’s life unravels in a mess of chaos and Grief, his despair manifests physically as an unwelcome houseguest: Crow.

The official synopsis sets the unsettling stage:

“Left to raise two young sons after the unexpected death of his wife, Dad’s life begins to unravel. Grief is messy and chaotic enough as it is, but when it takes the form of an unhinged and unwanted house guest—Crow—taunting him from the shadows, things start to spiral out of control… but maybe that’s exactly what Dad needs.”

Jessie Cave and  David Thewlis (who voices the Crow) star alongside Cumberbatch, completing a powerful cast of seasoned talent. Benedict Cumberbatch’s presence nearly guarantees an emotional, incredible performance. The actor has proven his talent time and again in films such as Doctor Strange, multiple Avengers movies, and The Imitation Game.

Cave has stated that the film handles tender subject matter. Its depiction of the emotional and psychological fallout is deeply disturbing. “The film obviously dances on the premise of tender subject matter, and though it is not overtly graphic in its depiction of death, it’s disturbing all the same.”
