In a casting move that makes perfect sense, Ryan Hurst has officially been tapped to play Kratos in Prime Video’s live-action “God of War” series!
If you’re still recovering from his time as Opie on “Sons of Anarchy,” this news might be the healing you need. It’s also a massive homecoming for Hurst—he actually voiced Thor in the God of War Ragnarök game (earning a BAFTA nod in the process). Now, he’s trading the hammer for the Blades of Chaos.
The Story: A New Pantheon
The series is skipping the Greek “god-slaughtering” era and jumping straight into the emotional Norse chapters. Led by showrunner Ronald D. Moore (Outlander, For All Mankind), the show follows Kratos and his ten-year-old son, Atreus, on a journey to spread the ashes of Kratos’s late wife, Faye.
It’s the ultimate “grumpy dad” road trip. Kratos is trying to teach his son how to be a god (and maybe not a jerk). And Atreus is trying to teach his father how to be, well, human.
Behind the Scenes
Amazon, MGM, and Sony Pictures Television aren’t taking this lightly. Check out the talent attached:
Frederick E.O. Toye (who recently blew everyone away with “Shōgun” and “The Boys”) will direct the first two episodes. The team includes heavy hitters like Naren Shankar (The Expanse) and game director Cory Barlog.
To add to the excitement, the show has already received a two-season order, and pre-production is underway in Vancouver.
Why Ryan Hurst?
Aside from the fact that he has the perfect “stoic mountain of a man” energy, Hurst is on a massive roll. You’ve seen him in “The Walking Dead,” “Bates Motel,” and the recent Netflix hit The Abandons. Plus, he’s starring in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming Trojan War epic, The Odyssey, this July. The man was born to wear ancient armor.
