A Divine Nightmare: Nicolas Cage’s Controversial’ The Carpenter’s Son’ Arrives on Blu-ray
Prepare for a spiritual showdown that is anything but a Sunday school lesson. One of the most talked-about and divisive films of the year, The Carpenter’s Son, is coming home.
Forget the sanitized stories you know. Starring Nicolas Cage, FKA Twigs, and Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place), this is a dark dive into the early life of a family the world has revered for two millennia.
A Holy War in the Shadows
Set in a remote, dust-choked village in Roman-era Egypt, it follows a carpenter, his wife, and their teenage son, known only as “The Boy.” They’ve spent years living as fugitives, from a dark threat that has followed them since the boy’s birth.
Their fragile peace is shattered upon their arrival at a new settlement. A mysterious stranger (Isla Johnston) begins to stalk the boy. They tempt him to rebel against his father’s strict, protective rules. The boy experiments with a power he doesn’t yet understand. Soon, Joseph realizes with absolute horror that they aren’t just dealing with teenage angst. A demonic force is hunting them—literally identified as Satan—determined to corrupt the child before he can fulfill his destiny.
Why the Controversy?
Director Lotfy Nathan (Harka) didn’t pull this story from the standard Bible. Instead, he drew inspiration from the Infancy Gospel of Thomas, an ancient “apocryphal” text, one excluded from the New Testament for being too wild.
In this version, a young Jesus isn’t just “holy”—he’s dangerous. He’s a petulant, powerful teenager who struggles with a temper and supernatural abilities that can both heal and destroy. With imagery of babies being cast into fires, possessed women biting off faces, and snakes being pulled from throats, it’s easy to see why the film has sparked massive debates (and even picketing) among religious groups.
A Powerhouse Creative Team
Nathan, of Coptic Christian descent, brings a terrifying visual language to the screen by focusing on the “humanity” of the holy family. Including Joseph’s fear that his son might actually be a monster.
