If you think your family has baggage, the Laye siblings are here to make you feel a whole lot better about your life.
After a killer run on the 2025 festival circuit, the supernatural thriller The Calling Witch (The Calling) has been scooped up by Vantage Media. It officially hits digital platforms this January, which means your next movie night is officially sorted.
When Your Mom’s Books Bite Back
The story follows Virginia (Danika Golombek) and her little brother Edward (Grayson Eddey). They are trying to pick up the pieces after their mother, a famous horror author, tragically takes her own life.
Virginia moves back home, but the “mourning period” quickly turns into a “survival period.” It starts with a break-in at their mom’s creepy writing shed. Soon, it escalates to… well, let’s just say you’ll never look at a garden statue the same way again (poor kitty).
As it turns out, their mom’s final book featured a child-eating entity called The Calling Witch—and she didn’t stay on the page. Now, the siblings have to dig up some dark family secrets to stop the monster before they become its next chapter.
The Team Behind the Terror
Director Mark Wilson and writer Chris Retts (Wade in the Water) have teamed up again to deliver a “home invasion” story with a massive supernatural twist.
As for the cast, you’ll recognize Danika Golombek from 7 Witches and Marcus DeAnda from “Better Call Saul.” They bring some serious emotional weight to a movie that’s as much about grief as it is about monsters.
Coming Soon
This isn’t just a jump-scare fest. It’s an atmospheric “slow-burn” that’s perfect for fans of movies like The Strangers or The Witch. It looks at how trauma can literally turn into a monster. It is a “sophisticated” horror flick that’ll stay with you long after the credits roll.
You can stream it starting today, January 20, 2026, on Amazon Prime, Fandango at Home (Vudu), DirecTV, and Vubiquity.
