Damian McCarthy is officially moving from indie “if you know, you know” status to the horror big leagues. After blowing us away with Caveat and Oddity, McCarthy is back with Hokum, and it looks like a total trip.
Backed by Neon (the studio that knows exactly how to rattle our nerves), the film is set to world premiere at SXSW this month before hitting theaters later this year.
The Big Names Behind the Screams
McCarthy isn’t flying solo this time. He’s got some heavy-hitting horror royalty producing, including Roy Lee (It, The Ring) and Steven Schneider (Paranormal Activity).
Leading the cast is Adam Scott, who is no stranger to the genre (remember Hellraiser: Bloodlines or the trippy vibes of Severance?). He’s joined by a stellar supporting crew, including Peter Coonan (King of the Travellers), Austin Amelio (The Walking Dead), David Wilmot (Station Eleven), and Will O’Connell (Game of Thrones).
A Honeymoon Suite from Hell
Adam Scott stars as Ohm Bauman, a novelist who heads to a remote inn for a somber task: scattering his parents’ ashes. But instead of finding closure, he finds local legends about a witch haunting the inn’s honeymoon suite.
Naturally, things go south fast. Between disturbing visions and a mysterious disappearance, Ohm is forced to face some seriously dark secrets from his own past. Check out the new teaser image (thanks to Collider) to see Scott looking properly unsettled.
Why We’re Hyped
If you’ve seen McCarthy’s previous work, you know he’s a master of “creeping dread”—the kind of horror that gets under your skin and stays there. Seeing him work with a bigger budget and a cast like this is basically a dream come true for fans.
Following Hokum’s SXSW premiere, Hokum will open in theaters on May 1, 2026.
