Class is officially back in session—and apparently, graduation is still a long way off for the afterlife’s favorite overachiever.

Paramount+ has officially renewed “School Spirits” for Season 4, proving that even in the Great Beyond, there’s no such thing as a “final” exam. The news comes hot on the heels of the Season 3 finale, which wrapped its ghostly mystery on March 4th.

The Purgatory Playbook

For the uninitiated (or those who haven’t been keeping up with their haunting), the series follows Maddie (Peyton List), a teenager trapped in high school purgatory. Instead of worrying about prom or SATs, she’s busy investigating her own mysterious disappearance.

The closer she gets to the truth, the more she realizes that her classmates—both living and “less so”—are hoarding more secrets than a burn book.

The Usual (Undead) Suspects

The halls of Split River High remain crowded with a stellar ensemble, including Kristian Ventura, Milo Manheim, Spencer MacPherson, Kiara Pichardo, Sarah Yarkin, Nick Pugliese, and Josh Zuckerman.

Behind the Scenes (and the Veil)

Creators Nate and Megan Trinrud continue to steer the ship as co-showrunners and executive producers. While Oliver Goldstick is stepping back from his previous showrunner duties, he’s staying on as a consultant for Season 4 to ensure the vibes remain appropriately spooky. Lead star Peyton List also continues her dual-threat status, serving as an executive producer.

“A crime-solving journey where the biggest mystery isn’t just who did it, but how many secrets one high school can actually hold.”

So Far…

If you haven’t seen all three seasons, skip this to avoid spoilers.

Season 1 & 2: The Ghost in the Hallways

The mystery kicks off with Maddie Nears waking up dead in her high school’s basement with no memory of how she got there. Trapped in “Split River High Purgatory” alongside a ragtag group of ghosts from different decades, she discovers she can uniquely communicate with her living best friend, Simon. Together, they peel back the layers of a town rotting with secrets, originally suspecting everyone from her grieving mother to her sketchy boyfriend. However, the real twist is a supernatural gut-punch: Maddie isn’t actually dead. Her body was hijacked by Janet, a rogue spirit who used a thinning of the “thin spots” to cross back into the land of the living, leaving Maddie’s soul stranded in the afterlife.

Season 3: The Body Snatcher Hunt

Season 3 shifts into high gear as Maddie and her ghostly squad—including the charming 80s jock Wally and the cynical Rhonda—try to track down “Janet-in-Maddie ‘s-body” before she ruins Maddie’s life (and physical form) forever. The investigation delves deeper into the sinister motives of Mr. Martin, the ghost teacher who has been hoarding trauma-filled artifacts from the spirits for decades. While Simon struggles with the psychological toll of talking to a “hallucination,” the season finale leaves the group at a massive crossroads: the barrier between life and death is more fragile than ever, and reclaiming Maddie’s identity might require a sacrifice that changes the afterlife’s rules permanently.
