The wait is finally over. After wrapping production all the way back in 2020 under the title Solitary, director Nate Parker’s long-delayed project is finally breaking out—and it has a massive chip on its shoulder. Rebranded as Newborn, the film’s official trailer has arrived, promising a haunting psychological thriller that asks a chilling question: Can you ever truly leave solitary confinement behind? Last week we shared the first look, now the tense trailer has arrived.
The Plot: Freedom is a Minefield
David Oyelowo (Selma, Lawmen: Bass Reeves) stars as Chris Newborn, a man who has just endured seven grueling years in solitary confinement. He is technically a free man. But as he steps back into society, he quickly realizes that the real world is its own kind of psychological prison.
The film follows Chris as he attempts to rebuild a life and reconnect with a family that no longer seems to fit. As the trauma of his isolation begins to blur the lines between his living room and his former cell, Newborn delivers a raw, unflinching look at the mental toll of being “erased.”
A Powerhouse Ensemble
Writer-director Nate Parker (The Birth of a Nation) has assembled a heavy-hitting cast to shoulder the film’s intense emotional weight. The cast includes David Oyelowo, Olivia Washington (I’m a Virgo), Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan), and Jimmie Fails (The Last Black Man in San Francisco)
Disrupting the System: The AMC & Mansa Partnership
Newborn isn’t just a movie; it’s a direct challenge to the Hollywood status quo. The film marks a historic distribution collaboration between AMC Theatres and Mansa Studios—the joint distribution label founded by Parker and Oyelowo themselves.
By bypassing traditional studio distribution and streaming algorithms, this partnership aims to put the power directly back into the hands of the filmmakers and moviegoers, prioritizing a communal, big-screen experience.
Coming Soon
Will Chris find his way back to reality, or is the damage already done? Find out on April 10, 2026, when Newborn opens exclusively in AMC theaters.
