The Curse of La Llorona has a fantastically frightening trailer. It looks we can expect another horror masterpiece from producer James Wan.
The film follows a social worker who, while investigating the mysterious disappearance of two children, discovers her own family might also be in jeopardy.
Did you know that the film is based on a legend? The Curse of La Llorona is inspired by the centuries-old Mexican folk legend of “The Weeping Woman”. In the tale, a beautiful woman named Maria meets and marries a handsome young man. After she bore him twin boys, he leaves her for another woman. One night Maria drowns her children in the Rio Grande river in anger after seeing him with his lover. Following the death of her children, she was found dead by the river. La Llorona is said to haunt the river weeping for her children. She walks the river’s banks in a long white dress, shouting “Mis niños! Donde están mis niños!” (Where are my children?). It is said that if you hear her call she will come for you, but her preferred victims are children.
The story is told to warn children about what can happen at night and to warn teenagers about falling for the wrong man. There are disputes if the tale is based on a true story or not. But if it is true, it’s heartbreaking.
Directed by Michael Chaves and written by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis, the film stars Linda Cardellini, Patricia Velasquez, Jaynee-Lynne Kinchen, Roman Christou, Raymond Cruz, and Sean Patrick Thomas.
Wan, under the banner of his company Atomic Monster, produces alongside Gary Dauberman and Emile Gladstone. Michael Clear serves as executive producer.
The Curse of La Llorona is from New Line, who serves as a home for Wan’s Conjuring universe.
