Horror fans are buzzing following the release of Mike Flanagan’s acclaimed series adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie. Streaming now on Prime Video, the eight-episode limited series reimagines the classic telekinetic tragedy for modern audiences. Summer H. Howell stars as the infamous Carrie White, delivering a heartbreaking performance grounded in pure kindness and innocence. After her father dies in an accident, Carrie leaves home in isolation to attend high school under the watchful eye of her hyper-religious mother, played by Samantha Sloyan.

Modern Consequences Elevate the Classic Nightmare
Once at school, Carrie faces merciless harassment led by spoiled bully Chris Hargensen, played by Alice Thornton. Notably, the series updates the setting to the present day, making social media the primary weapon of psychological torture. Chris launches a viral account called Carrie Red, triggering escalating chaos, privacy violations, and violence across the entire student body. While some purists question the modern setting, the digital bullying makes Carrie’s tragic ordeal feel vastly more terrifying.
The series expands on King’s tale. We learn why Margaret is the way she is. We also see how people’s actions can lead to real-world horrors.
Expanding the Interconnected King Universe
Flanagan ingeniously weaves subtle connections across the broader Stephen King universe. The script includes explicit references to The Shining’s shine, along with character ties to King’s “The Institute,” whose season two premiere is nearing. The series connects through Carrie’s friend Emaline, mysterious strangers at the prom, and a film crew interviewing the prom’s survivors. These narrative threads also lay subtle groundwork for Flanagan’s long-anticipated adaptation of The Dark Tower.
The series explores how anyone, no matter how pure of heart or kind, can be pushed to their breaking point, and that people’s actions must have consequences. Granted, that shouldn’t include the death of over two hundred people.
A Triumphant Addition to Flanagan’s Horror Legacy
Flanagan succeeds again by honoring King’s emotional core while modernizing its terrifying real-world stakes. Having previously adapted King masterpieces like Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep, and The Life of Chuck, the director proves his unparalleled understanding of the author’s work. Flanagan’s King adaptations have no end in sight. He is next adapting the novel The Mist, and I am totally here for it.
The Verdict
So to sum it up: “Carrie“ is a brilliant masterpiece. It’s a heartbreaking triumph no genre fan should miss. And Summer H. Howell was the ideal actress to bring the character to life. For those concerned: The modern spin doesn’t damage the core story; in fact, it makes it even more devastating. Flanagan once again proves that he is a true master of horror and the perfect filmmaker to carry on King’s legacy.
