Robert Rodriguez has come along from his indie start with his most recent film Alita: Battle Angel having a budget close to $200 million, but Rodriguez is returning to his indie roots with the horror film Red 11, set to premiere at SXSW. With a budget of just $7,000 (the same as his debut feature El Mariachi), the film was written by Rodriguez and his son Racer.
Adapted from a script written 25 years ago that was based on Rodriguez’s real-life experiences in a Medical Research Facility, Red 11 is set in a dark, warped version of the world of the legal drug research.
“At these Facilities, young guys become Lab Rats to make quick money, but our hero RED 11 is here to buy his way out of a huge debt to the tune of $7,000. This story shows the quirks, characters, and comedy of Robert’s experiences of being a human Lab Rat, but with a sci-fi and horror twist.” Collider writes.
Red 11 stars Katy Harris, Alejandro Rose-Garcia, Katherine Willis, Roby Attal, Elizabeth Trieu, and Pierce Bailey.
