Blu-ray Review: Universal Horror Collection: Volume 3 (1939 – 1941)

Straight up; the last two Universal Horror Collections brought to us courtesy of those wonderful warlocks over at Scream Factory have been nothing if not a whole monstrous mess of fright flick fun (don’t believe me? Head here and here and read my thoughts on the matter for your own sinister self!)! Let’s see if Volume 3 lives up to the legacy of it’s predecessors! First up we travel to the not-so-jolly land of 15th century England with 1939’s Tower of London! Hunchbacked Richard Duke of Gloucester (Basil Rathbone), is sixth in line in succession to the throne, and he is pretty pissed about that let me tell ya. So what does that damned deformed dastard… err, bastard do to remedy that situation? Why he begins secretly eliminating those ahead of him in line with the help of his putrid pal Mord (Boris Karloff), the bloodthirsty town executioner (equally deformed as his boss; in this case with a club-foot). Top 10 Films 10.The Head Hunter (review) In a cold, medieval forest, a warrior (Christopher Rygh) stalks the land eternally hunting for one more monster head to add to his collection… but this decapitation would offer our hero sweet revenge! While at it’s heart an absolute exercise in minimalism, this film is everything I crave from genre cinema; unique, inventive, and packed with sweet, sweet creatures! Grim, grizzly, nihilistic, and often breathtaking; The Head Hunter is easily one of the best horror pics that has come down the putrid pike in a damn sight! -Dan XIII 9. The Lighthouse (review) Robert Eggers (The Witch) is back with his new venture into the dramatic, psychological horror with The Lighthouse starring Willem Dafoe. Set on an isolated island in New

Blu-Ray Review: The Lighthouse

From the director of The Witch, Robert Eggers, comes The Lighthouse, a dark psychological thriller that follows two lighthouse keepers living on a remote island in New England in the 1890s. Filmed in black and white, the story plays out against crashing waves and a stark landscape. Eggers choice of black and white magnifies the film’s intensity by making you feel out of place and adds a layer of bleakness to the movie. We watch as Willem Defoe and Robert Pattinson work and live as they go on a slow descent into madness which feels so very real. Pattinson has not received much respect as an actor since his role as a sparkly douche of a vampire in the Twilight franchise, but he complete redeems himself is The Lighthouse proving he has real talent. His portrayal of Thomas, a man who begins to question his reality after living with Defoe’s unstable Thomas Wake, is absolutely incredible. This is coming from

Movie Review: Kill Ben Lyk (2018)

All across jolly ol’ London-towne a masked bloke is offing people named Ben Lyk. this causes a ton of static for Ben Lyk (Eugene Simon), a wannabe social media gadfly who is a likable, if not very entertaining to watch, online presence. Soon, our hero finds himself in a safe-house, along with an ass-load of other Ben Lyks (of which there are a surprising number of) as the constabulary have gotten wise to the Lyk related homicides and rounded-up all potential victims. That of course is a right shit idea, and soon our Terminator stand in makes the scene, and our main man Ben is balls deep in trouble as he tries to deduce just why these Ben Lyk eliminations are going down in the first place! Running a scant 77 minutes, Kill Ben Lyk is consistently funny, suspenseful, and at times completely pitch black. It’s also rather timely as one of the Ben Lyk’s is a male-to-female transitioned former

Netflix Review: The Witcher

Netflix’s The Witcher, based on the book and gaming series, is a surprise hit. When I first heard about the series I was excited, Games of Thrones had ended and I was looking for something to take its place. I will confess, I’ve never read the books or played the games. Henry Cavill stars as Geralt of Rivia, the Witcher. Cavill got ripped for his role as Superman, but he got swole for his role as The Witcher. I’ll be honest with you, he didn’t impress me as Superman, but he was made to play Geralt. A combination of badass, stoic, and heroic, you can’t help but cheer for the monster hunter whose goal, in the beginning, is to make a living slaying beasts for cash. As the story progresses, Geralt’s sense of honor begins to strengthen, even though he tries his best to fight it. In the end, he is a man on a mission to save a young
