From writer-director Jeff Barnaby comes Blood Quantum. In the dead are coming back to life outside the isolated Mi’gmaq reserve of Red Crow, except for its Indigenous inhabitants who are immune to the zombie plague. Traylor (Greyeyes), the tribal sheriff, must protect his son’s pregnant girlfriend, apocalyptic refugees, and reserve riffraff from the hordes of walking white corpses. “Jeff Barnaby is a First Nations filmmaker born on the Mi’gmaq reserve, his country. Quantum and his debut feature, the cult-hit, take place. He is the writer, director, editor, and composer of Blood Quantum, which opened TIFF’s Midnight Madness program in 2019 to both audience and critical acclaim. His films frequently cast from within the Indigenous community and paint a stark and scathing portrait of post-colonial Indigenous life and culture – in this case, painting it in blood.” Blood Quantum is produced by Quebec-based production company Prospector Films as well as John Christou & Robert Vroom, and executive produced by Todd Brown,

You would think that a brand new subdivision would be an ideal place to start a future, but that is not the case in Lorcan Finnegan’s Vivarium. When a young couple, played by Jesse Eisenberg and Imogen Poots, enters a real estate office they get more than they bargained for after finding themselves trapped in a neighborhood. Unable to leave until they raise a mysterious child, the couple finds them fighting for their lives and their sanity. Vivarium is unlike any movie I’ve ever seen. The way Finnegan and co-writer Garret Shanley manipulate your emotions is both subtle and clever, leaving you with an undeniable uneasy feeling in your gut as the story plays out. Imogen Poots is the heart of Vivarium. I was so impressed by her performance. She captured her character Gemma’s every emotion so well and made the movie feel real. You really could almost feel her pain. Poots has fantastic range. Eisenberg’s crotchety character Tom was

This May, Random Media’s horror-thriller Wretch, written and directed by Matthew Dunehoo, is coming home. Wretch follows Nat Harris, a young man who should be celebrating his 30 days sobriety, but instead he’s coming undone. Booze suppresses hallucinatory visions of a disfigured face that’s haunted him since childhood and getting clean means the visions are back with a vengeance. Things get worse with the news that his new boyfriend, Adam, has cancer. As Adam shares his fears, Nat tries to assure him that he is not going to die. Jean Alexander owns the vegan café where Nat works. She’s convinced he is spiritually “gifted” and an ideal candidate to learn the obscure occult healing modality she practices called “Enceladism,” popularized by her self-help guru Pete, an Irish mystic living near Kansas City. Martin L. Washington Jr., (Alaska Is a Drag), Shannon Conley (Cutie Honey), Joe Rooney (Monged), Erin Day (The Dinner Guest), and Maria Olsen (Percy Jackson & the Olympians:
